India’s foreign exchange reserves fell by $9.99 billion to $671.63 billion in the week ended June 12. This was a sharper fall than the previous week’s decline.

Liquidity: Money market rates harden

Money market rates rose to 5.37% from an average of 5.16% a week earlier. The rise happened because surplus liquidity in the banking system fell after advance tax payments.

Banking system liquidity fell to ₹4,772 crore as of June 17. This was the lowest level in the current financial year. A week earlier, the system had a surplus of around ₹1.7 lakh crore.

When liquidity falls, short-term borrowing rates can rise because banks and market participants have less surplus cash available.

Buybacks: SEBI approves return of open-market share buybacks

SEBI has approved the return of open-market share buybacks from August 1, 2026.

Companies will have to complete buybacks within 66 days and use at least 40% of the proposed buyback amount.

A share buyback happens when a company buys its own shares from the market. This can reduce the number of shares outstanding and may improve per-share metrics if earnings remain stable.

Trade policy: Goyal comments on exports and FTAs

Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said India’s merchandise exports rose about 15% during April-June 14 despite 50% US tariffs.

He also said India will not implement the US trade agreement until it secures a competitive tariff edge over competing nations. The India-EU FTA is expected to be signed by December and implemented around February-March 2027.

An FTA, or free trade agreement, can reduce tariffs and other trade barriers between countries. For exporters, lower tariffs can make products more competitive in foreign markets.

SBI

SBI is “seriously considering” securitizing part of its nearly ₹10 trillion home loan portfolio, chairman C.S. Setty said. The bank is looking to diversify funding beyond deposits.

At SBI, loans grew 16.9% in FY26, while deposits grew 11%. This means lending grew faster than the deposit base that usually funds a bank’s loan book.

India’s total securitization volumes grew 5% to ₹2.5 trillion in FY26, based on Icra estimates. Securitization allows a bank to pool loans and sell them to investors, which can free up capital and create another funding route.

Corporate briefs, insurance: Critical illness cover

A critical illness policy pays a fixed lump sum when the policyholder is diagnosed with a covered condition. This is different from a regular health insurance policy, which reimburses hospitalization expenses.

Experts recommend evaluating critical illness plans on three factors:

  • Illnesses covered
  • Waiting periods
  • Survival-period requirements

Standalone policies are generally preferred for better continuity and flexibility.

US-Iran talks: Formal agreement remains uncertain

Prospects for a formal US-Iran agreement remained uncertain after Switzerland said scheduled Friday talks would not take place. US Vice President JD Vance also cancelled his planned trip.

As per Mint’s reporting on Sunday’s talks at Buergenstock, Iran said it had again shut the Strait of Hormuz. Iran argued that Washington had failed to stop fighting in Lebanon. US officials disputed that the strait was closed.

President Donald Trump threatened to restart war with Iran even as Vance met Iranian officials under the interim peace deal. Trump warned that the US would “hit Iran very hard again” if Iran did not stop its proxies in Lebanon.

Brent crude rose to around $80 per barrel after the planned US-Iran talks were cancelled and Israel continued strikes in Lebanon. The August Brent contract closed at $80.57 on Friday, up 0.9%.

Even with this rise, oil was still on track for a steep weekly decline because shipping conditions in the Strait of Hormuz had improved.

The US dollar stayed firm. It rose as high as 161.8 against the Japanese yen, approaching a two-year high. This put the yen on track for its weakest level against the dollar since 1986.
