Indian benchmarks fall 1.16% as Metal and IT lead a broad decline, while Reliance waives the Jio brand royalty ahead of the Jio Platforms IPO

Indian equities closed lower on 23 June. The Nifty 50 ended at 23,824.10, down 1.16% from 24,102.90. The Sensex closed at 76,200.68, also down 1.16% from 77,094.07.

Broader markets also fell. Nifty Next 50 declined 1.37%, Nifty Midcap 150 fell 0.95%, Nifty Smallcap 250 fell 0.57%, and Nifty Microcap 250 fell 0.71%.

The Nifty opened 32 points lower at 24,071, moved up to the 24,120-24,130 zone by around 10 AM, and stayed near the day’s high until 11:30 AM. Selling around noon pushed it below 24,000 and toward 23,910-23,930 by around 1 PM. After moving in a 23,870-23,920 range through the afternoon, a final round of selling took it near 23,790-23,800. It closed at 23,824.10, close to the day’s low.

Sectoral indices

Nifty Pharma was the only sectoral index to close higher. Metal, IT, PSU Bank, Consumer Durables, Media, Bank, Energy, Service, Realty, Auto, and FMCG closed lower.

Institutional flows

Private-sector activity

HSBC’s flash Composite PMI eased to 57.4 in June from 59.3 in May, a three-month low. New orders grew at their slowest pace since March, and business confidence fell to its lowest level since January. Competitive pressure and gas supply shortages were part of the backdrop.

Reforms over stimulus

CII president R. Mukundan said current global disruptions should be treated as an opportunity to push reforms. He said India needs structural reform rather than stimulus to speed up its journey toward a $10 trillion economy.

US-India trade deal

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said India and the US are moving decisively toward finalising a bilateral trade agreement and advancing an “ambitious trade agenda.”

Iran oil waiver

The US Office of Foreign Assets Control issued a 60-day licence allowing the production, sale, and transport of Iranian-origin crude, petrochemicals, and petroleum products until 21 August 2026.

This matters for India because India imports nearly 90% of its crude oil. Every sustained $1-per-barrel rise in crude prices for a year adds about ₹18,000 crore to India’s annual import bill.

RBI growth forecast

The Reserve Bank of India lowered its FY27 growth forecast to 6.6% from 6.9% amid the West Asia war. A recent World Bank report cited in the source sees global growth slowing to 2.5% in 2026.

Monsoon contingency

The government has activated contingency plans across 315 districts because rainfall is about 43% below normal. It has identified 115 high-priority districts where less than 25% of cultivated area is irrigated. The 2002 drought was cited as a risk example, when foodgrain output fell about 18%.

Steel QCOs deferred

The Centre extended quality-compliance timelines for select steel products and industrial screws. This defers Quality Control Orders by about three months to align with PAN 2.0.

MSME payments

The government is working to amend the MSMED Act, 2006 to address delayed payments. A Jan Vishwas 2.0 bill to decriminalise minor offences is slated for the monsoon session of Parliament beginning 21 July. MSMEs contribute about 30.1% to India’s GDP and nearly 45% of trade.

India’s imports of liquefied petroleum gas from the US are set to cross 1 million tonnes in June, a record.

India’s merchandise exports to Singapore rose 124% year-on-year to $5.07 billion in April-May FY27. Singapore moved ahead of China and the Netherlands in India’s export rankings, and its share nearly doubled to about 5.7%.

Domestic headlines

Reliance Industries will not charge Jio Platforms a royalty for using the “Jio” brand as Jio Platforms prepares for its IPO. Jio Financial Services also does not pay for using the brand. For comparison, Vedanta earned ₹363 million in brand fees from group entities in FY25, and JSW Group charges a brand fee of 0.25% of annual turnover.

Meta appointed Kunal Shah as global head of WhatsApp, replacing Will Cathcart. Meta will also invest about $900 million in Cred at a $4.5 billion valuation.

SEBI proposed extending Direct Market Access to all investors. It is currently limited to institutional participants. If extended, retail investors could place orders directly, subject to risk-management checks.

Investment bankers are preparing IPO roadshows for at least five to six PE-backed firms. NSE and Jio Platforms have filed papers with the regulator.

Noel Tata will retire as chairman of Trent, ending a nearly three-decade association with the retailer. Tata Motors aims to raise its domestic passenger-vehicle market share to 20% by FY31 through a 26-model product offensive.

Aditya Birla Capital completed a ₹4,000-crore preferential issue, allotting 112.3 million shares to promoter entities and IFC. IFC received 25.8 million shares for about ₹920 crore.

JSW Group is developing an in-house e-bus platform, vehicle control unit, and battery pack to help with tender bids. Bharti Airtel raised its stake in Airtel Africa to 79%. Honasa Consumer agreed to acquire a 58% stake in Fluence Pharma.

The Enforcement Directorate searched Rajesh Exports over transactions that SEBI had flagged as misrepresenting nearly all revenue across five financial years. About ₹3,000 crore is under examination. Separately, the government will sell up to 2% in IRFC through an OFS, and Fairfax bought nearly $1 billion in Indian government bonds.

Rashi Peripherals bought 67% of VDA Infosolutions for ₹368.5 crore. A ransomware group posted about 200,000 files, around 0.63 GB, from a cyber breach at Tata Electronics. Bitcoin fell 3.9% to $61,677, its lowest level since 11 June.

Global developments

South Korea’s KOSPI fell as much as 10%, triggering a 20-minute circuit breaker after selling followed an AI-fuelled rally. SK Hynix fell over 10%, and Samsung Electronics dropped 7.5%.

Crude oil stabilised around $74 a barrel after a 60-day US waiver allowed global buyers, including American refiners, to buy Iranian crude and fuels. Prices were about 40% below their recent peak. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was picking up after an interim Iran-US peace deal, with about 135 vessels passing through the strait daily.

Micron Technology signed an agreement to supply memory and storage products to Anthropic and made a strategic investment in Anthropic’s latest funding round, as Anthropic prepares for a potential IPO.

SpaceX shares extended their pre-market decline below the listing price. The company was at risk of falling below a $2 trillion market capitalisation after losing more than $600 billion over three sessions, including nearly $400 billion in one day. Accenture shares rose pre-market after raising its FY26 share-repurchase target by $2 billion to $7.5 billion, up 62% year-on-year.

Heineken appointed Rafael Oliveira, currently of JDE Peet’s, as CEO from 1 October, replacing Dolf van den Brink. Oracle cut about 21,000 jobs, around 14% of its workforce, in fiscal 2026 as it focused more sharply on AI.

Iran denied the IAEA access to nuclear sites struck by the US and Israel. President Trump said Iran’s unfrozen funds will remain under US control. Iran said $12 billion of frozen funds is to be released in two equal instalments.
